This necklace is a memorial.
It started in Paris, at a little toast shop called Carrie — the kind of place that makes you understand why the French take bread seriously. I brought a bag back to Amsterdam, to a friend's place, and spent an entire week trying to recreate it. Milk toast, every morning, never quite getting it right — too thick, too pale, wrong pan.
On the last day, finally — one perfect, golden, completely unbroken piece, exactly the right color, exactly the right smell. I set the plate on the table and turned around to get a fork.
Her Akita ate it in one bite, swallowed it whole, and licked the floor clean with the calm energy of someone who had absolutely no regrets. Three seconds, seven days of work, nothing left. I tried to intervene but honestly there was never any chance — he had already won and we both knew it.
This necklace is for that toast. Gone too soon, never forgotten.
